Lee Smith is firmly committed to Tennessee.

The 6-foot-6, 245-pound Powell High School star has canceled upcoming official visits to Virginia Tech, Alabama and Auburn. He committed to UT in February.

Smith said meeting with UT's newest two coaches, offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe and tight ends coach Matt Luke, earlier this week reaffirmed his decision.

"I've known Coach Cut since I was a little kid," Smith said. "He coached my dad. I have a lot of respect for him. I trust what he tells me. After meeting Coach Luke, I love both of them. There are not two better guys to play for."

Smith, whose father, Daryl, was an offensive lineman at UT, admitted he was having doubts about his UT commitment when Virginia Tech came calling.

"There was definitely a time when Virginia Tech was looking good," Smith said. "They've got a tight end over there right now that will be a millionaire next year."

Virginia Tech tight end Jeff King caught 23 passes for 265 yards and five touchdowns this season.

Smith had 19 receptions for 291 yards and three touchdowns for the Panthers during the regular season. He could also play defensive end in college.

Smith said Cutcliffe convinced him that the tight end position would be a significant part of UT's offense in the future.

"I always wanted to go to Tennessee and run out of that 'T' but catching passes meant a little more to me that the 'T' did," Smith said. "Now I get to do both. It's an easy decision."

Smith said Alabama and Auburn were understanding when he canceled his visits. The Hokies weren't quite so congenial, he said.

"That's OK," Smith said. "Stuff happens."

Smith said he will take his official visit to UT on Jan. 13.
