The U.S. Army All-American Bowl is Jan. 7 in San Antonio, Texas. As usual, there will be plenty of prospects participating. Here are some of the 78 All-Stars scheduled to participate that UT's coaches will keep a close eye on:
* Jai Eugene, defensive back, Destrehan (La.) High School, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds: Eugene has been considering the Vols for months. UT running backs coach Trooper Taylor has taken over Eugene's recruitment after wide receiver coach Pat Washington was fired last month. Eugene speaks highly of Taylor and, if Eugene decides to leave Louisiana, UT has a great shot.
* Clifton Geathers, offensive tackle/defensive end, Carver's Bay (S.C.) High School, 6-7, 280 pounds: Geathers' college choices are wide open, and UT is in the hunt. Don't rule out UT defensive coordinator John Chavis making his pitch.
* Vidal Hazelton, wide receiver, Hargrave Military Academy, 6-3, 195 pounds: The Vols have slipped a bit for this prep school star. UT could use some recruiting from some of its All-Star San Antonio prospects if UT's coaches hope to get back in the race.
* Stafon Johnson, running back, Dorsey High, Los Angeles, Calif., 6-0, 200 pounds: Johnson is one of the most exciting tailbacks on the West Coast. Could he continue UT's California connection? The Vols have some work to do.
* Jacques McClendon, offensive lineman, Chattanooga Baylor, 6-3, 300 pounds: McClendon is widely considered UT's highest-ranking committed prospect. McClendon committed to UT in December 2004. He was UT's first commitment of the 2006 class.
* Jarrell Miller, linebacker/fullback, Highland Springs (Va.) High, 6-3, 235 pounds: Miller took his official visit to UT in October. He's also taken officials to Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Florida.
* Mitch Mustain, quarterback, Springdale (Ark.) High: 6-3, 200 pounds: Mustain may be a long shot for the Vols but you can be sure that UT will keep the pressure on as long as possible. Newly hired UT offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe is doing his best to lure Mustain to Knoxville.
* Robert Rose: Defensive end, Glenville High, Cleveland, Ohio, 6-4, 240 pounds: Rose is an exciting prospect with good speed and quickness. Rose has said he and teammate Raymond Small are a package deal. Small is a wide receiver and cornerback prospect. It's a three-team race among UT, Southern Cal and Ohio State.
* Andre Smith: Offensive lineman, Huffman High, Birmingham, Ala., 6-4, 320 pounds: Smith is one of the top offensive line prospects in the South, if not the nation. UT coaches would love for McClendon to share some positive words about UT as the two headline the East's offensive line.
Mulling Mustain: Mustain told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that he's starting almost completely over in his effort to decide where he will play.
"I'm not close at all," Mustain said.
Mustain announced in August that he was committed to Arkansas, but said last week that he was reopening the recruiting process.
"I guess in a way it's almost like going back to square one, but it's not," he told the newspaper. "It's a little more complicated now with a lot of schools having other commitments."
Notre Dame has reportedly cooled on Mustain because they have two other quarterbacks committed for the 2006 class.
Moving On: Eleven UT football players are scheduled to take part in graduation ceremonies today: Peter Chang, Jomo Fagan, Parys Haralson, Bill Martin, Jon Poe, Justin Reed, Kevin Shipley, Kevin Simon, Chavis Smith, James Wilhoit, and Robert Williams.
