Hancock on the Vols

When one school closes a door, another one might open a window.

Quintin Hancock from St. Augustine (Fla.) High School will choose an out-of-state school because he has not been offered a scholarship by Florida’s three big schools: Florida, Florida State and Miami.

The lifelong Gator fan sees the snubbing as extra motivation.

"If I go to Tennessee, I’ll get to play against Florida," the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder said. "I always wanted to go to Florida. I thought I was going to get (a scholarship offer), but I wasn’t really disappointed."

The wide receiver said Florida showed some interest during a camp in Gainesville last summer but elected to not offer him a scholarship. Two of Hancock’s St. Augustine teammates are committed to sign with Florida in February: running back Brandon James and defensive back Jacques Rickerson.

Hancock said he is considering Tennessee, Maryland, Georgia Tech and Nebraska. He said there is no leader for his services.

Hancock said he has been intrigued by UT’s offense led by new offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe.

"He (Cutcliffe) was there when Peyton Manning was there and when they won the national championship," he said. "I think I’d fit in well. They’re going to throw the ball around a lot."

Hancock has taken official visits to Maryland and Nebraska. He said he plans to visit Georgia Tech on Jan. 6 and UT on Jan. 13.

Hancock said he will use his visit to UT to become more familiar with the Vols.

"They’re a great school," he said. "They bring out good wide receivers. I just want to see what the players think about it and talk to the players a little bit."

Hancock said UT began recruiting him as a defensive back, but he told the coaches he prefers to have the ball in his hands.

"I told them I want to play wide receiver," he said. "I just feel more comfortable playing offense."

Hancock said he will have an in-home visit with UT head coach Phillip Fulmer on Wednesday.

Hancock said he plans to make a final decision after he has taken his last two official visits.
