Each year the city hosts the nation's top college prospects for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. This year, unlike 2005, college coaches will be able to attend the week's events because the game was moved up to Jan. 7.
Last year, the game was held Jan. 15 during a dead period when coaches are not allowed to contact athletes.
Tennessee still is determining which coaches it will send to San Antonio.
The new date has yet another effect on recruiting. Several prospects - as many as 21 - will announce their college decisions during the telecast of the game at the behest of the game's organizers.
That means several of those prospects will have made an announcement without having exhausted their NCAA allotment of five official visits.
There tends to be two significant official visit weekends during January. This year, those weekends are Jan. 13 and Jan. 20, the two weeks after Saturday's event.
College coaches and event organizers could find themselves pulling prospects in two different directions as recruiters try to get high school players to delay their announcement.
The bowl's new date could also affect just how the game is played. High school coaches could have a serious struggle on their hands as they try to keep their all-star player's attention on game preparation and not on the dozens of college coaches nearby.
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. and televised by NBC (locally on WBIR).
