As the 5-foot-10, 200-pound minor league baseball player weighs his college football options, he'll have to decide what is more important: playing offense or playing at Tennessee.
Cosby is considering UT, Texas, Baylor, and Oklahoma. He is scheduled to make an announcement this morning.
"At every school, except for Tennessee, I have more of an offensive chance," Cosby said. "At Tennessee, it's the secondary and maybe a little offense too."
Stratospheric pass receiving statistics were tough to come by for UT receivers last year. The deepest unit on the team had six receivers catch 18 passes last season. None had more than senior Tony Brown with 31. He is the only receiver who doesn't return for 2005.
That's why UT is recruiting Cosby as a defensive back where immediate playing time is far more likely.
That is important for the former Mart, Texas, star. At 23-years-old, a short, productive career at UT could mean a quick jump to the NFL a la former Vol and minor league baseball player Kelley Washington. Washington was selected in the third round of the NFL draft after two years at UT.
"That would be the route I would take if possible, but the education is important too," Cosby said. "I would like to come in and make an impact as soon as possible. There is the opportunity there (at UT) to play in the secondary. They're at the point to where, maybe, they'll win a championship."
Cosby was originally recruited as a defensive back and punt returner in 2001 when he signed with Texas. Cosby decided against football after being drafted by the Anaheim Angels. This time around, Cosby seems more interested in playing wide receiver.
"With Texas, their receiving core is good - they are good - but they're really young," Cosby said. "To go in as an older guy and maybe complete that aspect of it would be good. Every one of them, they have their positives."
Cosby's hometown, Mart, is just over 20 miles from Baylor's campus in Waco. That is certainly enough to keep the Bears in the race.
"Them being in Waco has a little bit to do with it," Cosby said. "They're definitely getting better. I think soon they may be bowl eligible.
"At the same time at Oklahoma, they're losing 17 players this year. That creates an opportunity with them also."
Cosby's strongest tie to UT is running backs coach Trooper Taylor. The two met when Taylor, who played and coached at Baylor, went to Mart to read to Cosby's middle school class. They have stayed in touch for nearly 10 years.
"I've known him the longest and I trust him," Cosby said. "It's hard to trust a lot of people in the recruiting process because they're just going to tell you what you want to hear.
"Knowing him personally before anything in high school, it helps as a trust factor. But even more in that process, I know that no matter what happens that he will always be a friend. He'll be there with me."
Shy Geno: Eugene "Geno" Hayes said he is not talking to the media until his announcement Wednesday at 1:40 p.m. Hayes committed to UT on Jan. 16 then de-committed after an official visit to Clemson on Jan. 22.
The 6-2, 205-pound linebacker from Greeneville, Fla., is also considering Florida State.
