Allen, Haralson undergo surgeries

Injuries and attrition will present numerous opportunities for Tennessee football players this spring.

No fewer than nine players will be sidelined or limited by injuries when spring practice begins March 10.

Cornerback Jason Allen and defensive end Parys Haralson are the most-recent additions.

Allen had reconstructive surgery on his right shoulder Friday. Haralson had torn cartilage removed from his knee.

"I'll be back by the fall,'' said Allen, who announced last month he would remain at UT and not enter the NFL draft. "I didn't have to have this surgery. It's not the reason I stayed in school.''

Still, Allen will miss spring drills. Haralson will likely be limited, at the very least.

Middle linebacker Kevin Simon is also expected to miss spring work after having an operative surgical procedure performed on his foot last fall.

A fourth projected starter, outside linebacker Omar Gaither, will also be limited after having surgery to repair a broken toe.

Two significant contributors at defensive tackle are also dealing with offseason issues.

Defensive tackle Turk McBride had surgery on a wrist in January, and is scheduled for surgery on the other in March.

Defensive tackle Tony McDaniel remains suspended indefinitely after being charged with striking a fellow student on Jan. 12. McDaniel is awaiting a March 7 preliminary hearing.

Safety Robert Boulware is unlikely to return to the team in the spring and concentrating on track and field.

Offensively, receiver Chris Hannon will be limited after suffering a broken forearm in the Cotton Bowl and undergoing surgery on Jan. 3.

Tight end Brad Cottam underwent reconstructive surgery on his right shoulder in January and will also be out. Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Ramon Foster had toe surgery and will be limited.

Junior offensive guard Cody Douglas is trying to get his personal life settled after the death of his brother in an ATV accident last month. Douglas, who recently returned to school after attending his brother's funeral, finished last season playing on an injured foot and could miss or be limited this spring.
