UT fares well enough under new academic formula

The University of Tennessee was generally comfortable with its position as the NCAA on Monday revealed data in a sweeping new academic reform that will penalize schools that don't measure up.

Monday's data release was merely an indicator for where teams stand relative to the new guideline - the Academic Progress Rate (APR) - that goes into effect next year.

Teams could lose scholarships resulting from a complicated formula that emphasizes athletes staying academically eligible and remaining in the program.

UT football's APR was 920, barely below the all-clear mark of 925. UT men's basketball, however, checked in at 852 and has more ground to make up before next September, when UT must report its data to the NCAA. Women's basketball scored a perfect 1000.
