Among undecided, Bass may walk-on with Vols

On the football field, Andy Bass of Seymour High School displayed killer instincts as a linebacker. He naturally sprinted to wherever the ball was thrown or run.

That decisiveness led him to 140 tackles in the regular season, one shy of the PrepXtra leader.

But now he can't decide which way to go for his college choice.

Bass is considering UAB, Tulane and possibly walking on at Tennessee. At Wednesday's PrepXtra football banquet, Bass said he was invited to be a walk-on at UT and likely will choose that path.

"I'll get the same things scholarship players do," Bass said. "I'll just have to pay tuition."

Seymour coach Gary Householder doesn't know where Bass is going to land at all.

"All I know is that on the 28th (of January), he's going to Liberty for an official visit," Householder said. "That's all I know."

Other PrepXtra players are finding the decision to be a tough one. Signing Day is Feb. 2.

Austin-East's Anthony McAlister, the PrepXtra Defensive Player of the Year, dwindled his pursuers down to two, but is hoping to decide without anyone noticing.

"It's really just been those two teams - Tennessee Tech and Charleston Southern," McAlister said. "I'll just wait (to decide) and see if I can slip through the cracks."

McAlister garnered some interest from Texas A&M, but those talks have disappeared, he said.

A former teammate of McAlister's, Fulton's Elliott Bishop, has his choice down to two schools as well.

"I'm still undecided," Bishop said. "I'm looking at Louisville and Marshall.

"Louisville is more - their receiver situation would give me more of a chance to play. And Marshall is good academically.

"I'll probably decide next week. I'm still looking into things."

So is Central's star receiver, Terence Scott. However, he's getting close to committing to Marshall.

"I got a very good feeling from them," Scott said. "I'm not for sure yet, but I'm almost positive it will be Marshall."

Scott earned looks from Carson-Newman and South Carolina, but the Gamecocks didn't follow through.

"They didn't show that much interest," Scott said. "Marshall showed a lot. That's what it really comes down to.

"You want to go somewhere where they want you."

PrepXtra 2006: Dustin Lindsey of Alcoa may likely be the top recruit out of next year's PrepXtra seniors. He confirmed Wednesday that he received a hand-written letter from Southern California coach Pete Carroll.

"Yeah, Pete's been keeping in touch with me," Lindsey said. "I mean I've gotten a few letters from UT, but nothing is as big as getting a letter from Pete Carroll."

A visit to Southern California could ensue.

"Hopefully I'll get to go out there (for a visit)," Lindsey said. "I just want to meet (Heisman finalist) Reggie Bush."
