Tradition puts UT opener on Saturday

Tradition won out and Tennessee as expected will open the 2005 football season on a Saturday.

The Vols will play Alabama-Birmingham on Sept. 3 at Neyland Stadium with a 12:30 p.m. kickoff. Jefferson-Pilot Sports will televise the game and will be available locally on WVLT.

The JP offer came after Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton turned down a request from ESPN to move the season opener for the second consecutive year to a Sunday night.

"College football is traditionally meant to be played on Saturday," Hamilton said. "I don’t mind moving that occasionally but I don’t want to do that regularly.

Hamilton said he received about 30-35 complaints about the change last year when UT played Nevada Las Vegas on a Sunday night.

"With 110,000 at a game, some fans are not going to like it no matter when it is," Hamilton said.

UT’s game at Florida on Sept. 17 will be televised nationally by CBS with an 8 p.m. start.

"All things being equal, I would want to play (September games) on Saturday night," Hamilton said.

The third Tennessee game being televised under the SEC football package is the previously announced Nov. 5 contest against Notre Dame at South Bend, Ind. NBC will televise the game at 2:30 p.m.
