Fulmer: Campbell, Brooks didn't take care of issues

The "stupid and irresponsible behavior," that Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said got Corey Campbell and Daniel Brooks suspended Tuesday night included driving with suspended licenses, and in Campbell's case, a shoplifting charge.

Fulmer said both players are suspended for one game next season and must pay their way through school the second session of summer school.

The Vols have had 13 players cited or arrested for crimes since February of 2004.

Brooks was already on the list, having been suspended for two games for other incidents. He'll miss the home opener with Alabama-Birmingham and crucial road games against Florida and LSU before returning to play Oct. 1 against Mississippi.

Campbell, a junior safety from Spring, Texas, was arrested Friday after being stopped for a noise violation at 1:24 a.m., according to Knox County General Sessions Court records. Upon checking Campbell's record, police found his license was suspended.

Campbell, who's competing for a starting job, also had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court as related to a March 15, 2004, shoplifting charge. Campbell allegedly took a 25-foot coax cable from a Knoxville Walmart. The cable, which was valued at $6.96, was concealed in his sweatshirt.

Campbell was taken into custody after being stopped Friday. He was released after posting a $500 bond and has an Aug. 3 court date.

Campbell has five citations on his record from incidents that occurred between February, 2004, and April, 2005, according to Knoxville City Court records. The citations include a noise ordinance, speeding (2), underage drinking and improper lane use.

On two occasions, Campbell failed to show up for his scheduled court dates.

Brooks, a reserve junior linebacker and special teams standout, was issued a ticket for going the wrong way on a one-way street on March 6. Brooks failed to appear in court on March 29, and action was taken against his license. On June 14, police responding to a wreck on campus discovered Brooks' license was suspended and he was arrested. Brooks has a July 26 court date on the suspended license charge and two other citations for jaywalking and running a red light.

Brooks' past traffic citations also include: speeding in a construction zone (March 25, 2004), no driver's license in his possession (July 20, 2004) and no proof of insurance (March 25, 2004).

The players had issues they didn't take care of, Fulmer said Wednesday. "They didn't have the money, but they didn't try to get an emergency loan and they didn't communicate.

"I hope that requiring them to get a job during the second term allows them to further appreciate what an education and the value of a scholarship means to them."
