The Outland Trophy has been awarded to the best interior offensive or defensive lineman in college football since 1946. The winner is selected by the FWAA's All-America Committee, which picks the association's 25-man team and picks three Outland Trophy finalists.
Mahelona is also on the FWAA's preseason Nagurski Trophy watch list. The Nagurski Trophy goes to the nation's best defender.
UT players have won the Outland Trophy twice, defensive tackle John Henderson in 2000 and Steve DeLong in 1964.
Other SEC players on the preseason list include: Alabama center J. B. Closner, Florida center Mike Degory, Auburn noseguard T. J. Jackson, Georgia lineman Max Jean-Gilles, Auburn tackle Marcus McNeill, and LSU tackle Andrew Whitworth.
