Fulmer on Knight: I've got my own issues

Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer didn't have much to say about the prospects of UT pursuing Texas Tech basketball coach Bobby Knight to replace Buzz Peterson.

"I've met Bobby a couple of times," Fulmer said. "It's not my decision. I've got my own issues. I don't have to worry about that one."

In This Corner: Defensive coordinator John Chavis reminded several onlookers of two former WWF wrestling stars. Chavis, pumping his straight arms up and down, resembled The Bushwhackers as he celebrated an Omar Gaither interception during Thursday's scrimmage.

Trooper Treatment: Running backs coach Trooper Taylor made David Yancey chase a football over 150 yards and into the hedges as a punishment for fumbling. The routine consists of Taylor throwing the ball several times and the tailback in question diving on it.

Head Cheerleader: An exuberant Jason Allen ran off the practice field and said, "the defense won again." The senior defensive back has not practiced this spring because of off-season shoulder surgery.

Weyman Located: Brett Weyman, who is playing wide receiver and wearing No. 2, caught a 12-yard pass.

The former quarterback has been on a football odyssey since 2002 when recruiting expert Max Emfinger said that the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Weyman could be the next John Elway.

Weyman was a walk-on at UT after attending Fork Union Military Academy. However, financial problems forced him to leave UT and led to him accepting a scholarship with Louisiana Tech.

In 2004, he left Ruston, La., for Northeastern in Boston, but lasted only a quarter of a semester. He found his way back to Knoxville.

Weyman's return to UT represents his eighth school change, dating back to eighth grade in his hometown of Charleston, S.C. His other stops have included the Holderness School in New Hampshire; Worcester (Mass.) Academy and Avon Old Farms boarding school in Avon, Conn.

Notebook: Dack Ishi took snaps at quarterback. The former Catholic High School star did not attempt a pass. ... Freshman defensive tackle Demonte Bolden had a sack and another tackle-for-loss. ... Brent Schaeffer started the scrimmage at quarterback followed by Erik Ainge then Rick Clausen. ... Ainge had two fumbles, one on the snap and another as he bumped into a pulling offensive lineman.
