UT may soon decide status of McDaniel

Tennessee junior defensive tackle Tony McDaniel could learn his football fate as early as next month.

McDaniel has been suspended indefinitely since being arrested and charged with aggravated assault after striking a fellow UT student during a pickup basketball game at the recreation center on Jan. 12.

A videotape of the incident exists and has been used to evaluate the matter.

"The university matter is expected to be resolved in April or May before an administrative law judge,'' said Don Bosch, McDaniel's attorney. "It's separate from the criminal case.''

McDaniel's criminal case is pending an April 13 preliminary hearing in Knox County General Sessions Court.

McDaniel's legal team has been discussing a possible out-of-court settlement with the victim and his family.

If McDaniel is suspended from school for the fall semester or longer, it may be difficult for him to return for another season in 2006 and finish his eligibility, according to a source close to McDaniel's family.

McDaniel, a 6-foot-7, 300-pounder from Columbia, S.C., made his first career start for the Vols in their 38-7 win over Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl.
