Recruiters turn head of Warren

Florida football coaches are heading north faster than the snowbirds.

Miami and Florida State are the latest schools to visit with Brandon Warren, a tight end/defensive end from Alcoa High School.

Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer gets his mid-spring shot at impressing Warren today.

Florida State quarterback coach Daryl Dickey and tight ends coach John Lilly were in town Wednesday. Dickey knows the area. He played football at UT in the mid-1980’s and coached quarterbacks at UT in 1987 and 1988. Lilly is Florida State’s recruiting coordinator.

"They sound like very outgoing guys," Warren said of the Seminoles’ contingent. "They seem like they would be fun to be coached by. You could tell they were students of the game because they knew what they were talking about."

The Florida stop-ins began Tuesday with Miami tight end coach Mario Cristobal, who coached Kellen Winslow Jr. and Jeremy Shockey. The two tight ends were selected in the first round of the NFL draft.

"He’s a great guy," Warren said. "He’s coached great tight ends. He’s a cool guy. You don’t run into a lot of coaches that are really energetic. He’s crazy. I’m kind of like that, too."

Warren said he is still interested in LSU but the Tigers have not gained any sort of lead for his services as recent recruiting rumors have suggested.

"I’ve got about a top eight," Warren said with a laugh. "It’s still real early and I haven’t had a chance to talk things over with my family."

Warren said Miami, FSU, Florida, Ohio State, Tennessee and LSU are towards the top of the list. As per NCAA rules, coaches are allowed to visit prospects this month — making Alcoa a common stop for the nation’s elite programs.

"Having coaches come from big-time schools to see you at school, that’s crazy," a slightly awed Warren said.

Warren admitted that he was close to committing to UT along with running back Dustin Lindsey in mid-March.

"It was possible at the time but my family is really important to me and I didn’t want to go in and do something big without talking to them. I’m happy I waited," Warren said.

Warren said he is "real tight" with teammate Martin White, a lineman who is being recruited by UT, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest. Warren said attending the same school as White is a possibility but not a high priority.
