Under the advisement of his agents, Davis waited until after the first round of NFL training camps to decide which club to sign a free agent deal with.
"My agents were trying to figure out the best situation for me going into a camp, and having the best chance of making it,'' Davis said. "I think they might be ready to trade Travis Henry, and that should create a good opportunity.''
After projected starter Willis McGahee and Henry, the Bills have running backs Joe Burns, Shaud Williams, Dante Brown, Lionel Gates and recently signed free agent ReShard Lee on their roster.
Davis said he'd also be willing to play fullback in Buffalo.
"I'm at a point now, if it takes me selling popcorn, I'll do it,'' said Davis, a 6-0, 235-pounder. "It's a job now. In my situation, you just want to have a chance to prove yourself, no matter what it takes, fullback or special teams I'll pick it right up and do it.''
Davis said Buffalo also is attractive because of the success past Vols have had with the club.
Last season, Constantin Ritzmann, Jabari Greer and Rashad Baker made the roster as free agents. Former Vols Peerless Price and Shawn Bryson launched their NFL careers in Buffalo, and former UT receiver Tony Brown signed with the Bills after this year's NFL draft.
"I know it gets cold, but I'm excited about going up there,'' Davis said. "At first I was nervous about not signing with a team right away, but the more I learned about the process, I realized it's nothing to worry about.''
If anything, the extra couple of weeks has given Davis more time to allow his hamstring to heal. Davis pulled the hamstring two weeks before his Pro Day''workout at UT and reinjured it while running for scouts.
"I had clocked a 4.52 40 (yard dash) before the injury,'' Davis said. "It's a lot better now, and I feel like I'm back to my old self. I've been working out three times a week and getting treated by doctors.
"I just want to make the most of my opportunity.''
Road Road Game?: There's a possibility Tennessee's 2007 game scheduled at Cal might not be played in the Golden Bears' home stadium. According to a San Francisco Chronicle article, there's a chance Cal could move some of its home games that season while Memorial Stadium undergoes a multi-million dollar renovation. An alternate playing site has yet to be determined.
Schaeffer Future: Former UT quarterback Brent Schaeffer has sent release forms to eight schools, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
As the News Sentinel reported, South Florida remains a leading candidate for the services of the former Deerfield Beach, Fla., standout.
Other schools Schaeffer is considering include Central Florida, Miami, Clemson, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and Miami of Ohio.
UT coach Phillip Fulmer said he would grant Schaeffer a release to any school that's not on the Vols' future schedules while he's eligible.
