Smith plans to visit UT first week of June

The Jerry Smith sweepstakes apparently isn't over for Tennessee.

Wisconsin and Wake Forest remain as top choices, but the Wauwatosa (Wis.) East junior guard and plans to visit Tennessee June 3-5, his father, Jerry Smith Sr., said.

Smith took an official visit to Louisville on Friday and Saturday.

A fifth, and final, official visit remains possible to Connecticut, Iowa or Texas A&M, said Smith Sr., whose son already made official visits to Wisconsin and Wake Forest.

"He's taking the visits, hopefully, to solidify his choice and to bring some closure to things," Smith Sr. told The Wisconsin State Journal. "He will have some one-on-one conferences with coach (Rick) Pitino (at Louisville) and with coach (Bruce) Pearl (at UT). And, hopefully, he'll be able to make a decision about what he wants to do and rule out some possibilities."

Wisconsin has been courting Smith and Trevon Hughes, another highly regarded guard who is a junior at St. John's Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield, Wis., but the Badgers only have one scholarship remaining for 2006. Hughes' top choices are Wisconsin and Iowa, where he plans to take an unofficial visit June 3-5.

Smith Sr. said he understands Hughes could orally commit before his son does. But he wants his son to be certain about his decision, saying, "He has to feel it in his heart."

But Smith Sr. added: "Who knows? Maybe when Jerry gets back from Louisville, he'll say, 'Hey, this is what I need to do.' ''

Herrion May Leave Arkansas: The New Hampshire Union Leader reported that Arkansas assistant coach Bill Herrion visited New Hampshire on Thursday and is the leading candidate for the coaching vacancy.

Herrion, who was not retained after this past season by East Carolina, has been at Arkansas for one month.

The job opened two weeks ago when Phil Rowe resigned after six seasons.

Rowe, according the newspaper, has accepted a job as an assistant coach at George Washington. There, he will work with head coach Karl Hobbs. The two worked together as assistants at Boston University.
