Schaeffer will pay visit to Clemson

Former Tennessee quarterback Brent Schaeffer is mum on his future, but his mother, Chandra, confirmed he'll visit Clemson this week.

"He'll probably go there sometime this week,'' Chandra Schaeffer said. "He was on the spot when they (media) asked him where he might go, so he threw out a lot of names.

"He's going to take visits first. He hasn't made any decisions.''

South Florida and Texas A&M also are possibilities, according to Rick Schaeffer, Brent's uncle.

Schaeffer, a shy and elusive interview while at UT, couldn't be reached for comment. He's spent his time at home in Deerfield Beach, Fla., playing basketball, Chandra Schaeffer said. That is, when he's not taking phone calls from prospective schools.

"I thought I wasn't going to have to go through this (recruiting) again anytime soon,'' Chandra Schaeffer said. "It's just as crazy as the first time.''

When Schaeffer left UT last month after being suspended from the team, Vols' coach Phillip Fulmer said it was a "mutual decision.''

Schaeffer might have been considering the move prior to his arrest on misdemeanor assault charges, anyway.

"He said he didn't know if he was going through that again, going back and forth (at quarterback),'' Chandra Schaeffer said. "That made him a little down.''

Last year, Schaeffer became the first true freshman quarterback to start an SEC opener since 1945. Prior to breaking his collarbone against South Carolina, Schaeffer split quarterback duties with fellow freshman Erik Ainge.
