Vols' soak in history during tour of Hall

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - One exhibit at the College Football Hall of Fame drew Tennessee players like a magnet Friday afternoon.

It wasn't Red Grange's jersey or Bear Bryant's hounds-tooth hat.

Recent history was more compelling.

A screen playing video highlights dubbed "Plays of the Year" from the past few football seasons included various snatches of orange, such as James Banks' Hail Mary touchdown at Florida in 2003.

Seeing teammate Jason Allen get flattened by Auburn running back Ronnie Brown last year elicited a sharp response.

The Vols strolled through the hall shortly after their arrival in South Bend. Some 20 of their predecessors have been inducted, most recently linebacker Frank Emmanuel in 2004.

The proximity to the historic Notre Dame campus makes South Bend an ideal home for college football's shrine.

The Fighting Irish are well represented in the hall. Who knew William Shakespeare was an inductee? This one played at Notre Dame in the 1930s.

A couple of Vols you wouldn't expect make cameo appearances during a tour.

That quarterback wearing No. 16 is Rick Clausen, not Peyton Manning. It's part of bowl games exhibit that is updated annually. Clausen was the offensive MVP of last year's Cotton Bowl.

During a large-screen video in the main theatre, none other than A.J. Suggs fires a pass.

In the enshrinement area, a square sculptured facial rendering, grouped in decades, represents each player in the hall. George "Bad News" Cafego better behave, because Gen. Robert Neyland is right under him standing watch.

On Friday, the hall was tailored to Tennessee's visit.

A TV playing highlights of the 1998 national championship season greeted visitors at the entrance. Several other screens played highlights of UT-Notre Dame games.

The Vols' visit was untimely in an ironic sense. The lobby area is draped with helmets and banners of the current week's Top 25 poll. Tennessee dropped out this week for the first time since 2002.
