Seiber never thought much about the game while living in Germany. He was quite content playing the nation's favorite game, soccer, for a semi-pro team.
"The coach there came up to me and said, 'We know you can kick a soccer ball, let's see if you can kick a football,'" Seiber said. "I tried out. The next thing you know I started for the team and was kicking 50-yard field goals in the games."
The natural transition spurred Seiber to formulate a plan. He decided he would return to the United States, start kicking for a high school football team and be offered a college scholarship.
The plan worked to perfection. Seiber committed to play football for the Vols on Monday.
"Tennessee is my dream school," the 5-foot-10, 175 pounder from Central High School said. "I came here to get a scholarship to Tennessee and I did so it's a good feeling."
Seiber said he picked UT over Kentucky, Tennessee Tech, Virginia and North Carolina.
Seiber said he was first offered on Nov. 2, the same night UT's coaches offered a scholarship to kicker Daniel Lincoln from Ocala, Fla. Lincoln committed to play for UT that night.
"Coach (Phillip) Fulmer told me that one of us will be a punter and one of us will be the kicker," said Seiber, who admits he prefers placekicking. "We'll just compete for the job."
Seiber has never lived in a city for longer than 18 months. His Air Force father led the family to Japan, Texas, Hawaii, Nebraska, Panama and Germany.
"It's going to be great," Seiber said, "to know that I can settle down in one area for awhile."
Seiber's family lives in Germany. He said he'll take his official visit to UT in late December or early January.
Seiber said he is 10-of-15 in field-goal attempts this season. Three of those attempts were blocked, Seiber said. He said his longest field goal this season was 49 yards, he is averaging 40.8 per punt and has landed 94-percent of his kickoffs in the end zone for touchbacks.
