Bad Behavior

Fulmer to discipline guilty Vols

The ugly aftermath of Tennessee's ugly defeat Saturday will lead to disciplinary repercussions.

Head coach Phillip Fulmer said Sunday night he was still gathering information about a couple of incidents that occurred after Saturday's 28-24 loss to Vanderbilt at Neyland Stadium.

"I haven't talked to all parties yet,'' Fulmer said on his weekly teleconference. "I have tried to reach everybody.

"I'll have some resolution on that (today).''

In the frustration after the Vols' failed last play - an end-zone interception by Vanderbilt - several UT players appeared to throw their helmets on the ground. A number of players went to the locker room leaving their helmets on the field.

Offensive lineman Albert Toeaina reportedly spit on a Jumbotron cameraman as he left the field. The cameraman, Scott Liston, told WBIR-TV's Steve Phillips on Sunday that Fulmer had called him to apologize for the incident.

An attempt to reach Liston was not successful.

"If what happened happened like I've been told it happened,'' Fulmer said, "then there will be disciplinary action.''

The Vols (4-6, 2-5) finish the season at Kentucky (3-7, 2-5) on Saturday.

Kickoff is 12:30 p.m. (WVLT-TV).

Vandy broke a 22-year losing streak against Tennessee. Kentucky's losing streak is 20 years, dating to a 1984 win.

The Wildcats lost 45-13 at Georgia on Saturday.

Ainge Again: Erik Ainge could get the season's last start at quarterback against the Wildcats.

Rick Clausen, who played every snap of the Vanderbilt game, suffered a sprained knee on the final play. The injury occurred as Clausen was pressured and threw a pass that was intercepted by Vandy's Jared Fagan.

Clausen was on crutches after the game with ice taped to his left knee. He was still on crutches Sunday.

"It's at the very least a strain,'' Fulmer said. "He's very questionable.

"With Rick's situation, it certainly looks like Erik will be the guy.''

No Bowl Blues: The loss to the Commodores means UT won't go to a bowl for the first time since 1988.

That means no bowl practice, which has been an annual opportunity to work young players to get ready for the following season.

"It's terrible,'' Fulmer said. "It's awful. We could use those days of practice.

"We'll turn it into days we could be out recruiting. It's very strange.''

Speaking of recruiting, the Vols are not off to a strong start and have ground to make up before signing day in February. This will be Fulmer's first recruiting campaign built around a losing season.

"I'd rather be undefeated going out recruiting, obviously,'' he said. "There will be some youngsters who look at it as a great opportunity to come into a great program and have an opportunity to contribute early.

"There will be others not so anxious to come.''

Best Shot Coming: Fulmer said the absence of a bowl game to shoot for won't change the approach to playing Kentucky.

"We'll go up there to try to win the game,'' he said. "Whoever we've got to play to win that game, I think that's the way it should be, so that's how we're going to approach it.''

Scouting the Wildcats: Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson was lifted in the third quarter at Georgia for evaluation of a sprained thumb.

He was replaced by freshman Curtis Pulley, who rushed for 61 yards.

Tailback Rafael Little had his rushing parade stopped at Georgia. Little had rushed for more than 100 yards in four of the past five games but managed only 29 yards on 13 carries at Georgia.

Simon quiet: Middle linebacker Kevin Simon's absence most of the second half was formation-dictated, Fulmer said.

"We played a lot of Mustang and nickel in the second half,'' Fulmer said. "I don't know that he had any injury I'm aware of.''

Simon was credited with one tackle and one pass break-up.

Extra Points: UT regained the SEC rushing-defense lead Saturday at 86.1 yards allowed per game. The Vols rank third nationally behind Ohio State and Colorado. Arian Foster's 765 rushing yards rank fifth on the all-time UT freshman season chart. To move up to fourth, he'll need 175 at Kentucky to pass James Stewart's 1991 total. Vandy punter/kicker Bryant Hahnfeldt suffered a torn ACL in his non-kicking knee attempting to tackle UT's Jonathan Hefney on a punt return.
