UT athletes have run-in

Linebacker Brooks, basketball player Hendrix dismissed

Daniel Brooks went from ballyhooed to disappointing during his Tennessee football career. Now, that career is over.

Brooks was dismissed from the Vols after a confrontation between he and basketball players Jemere Hendrix and Andre Patterson.

Hendrix also was dismissed. Patterson has been indefinitely suspended.

Hendrix and Patterson approached Brooks as he walked to class Monday morning, a source told the News Sentinel.

An assistant basketball coach picked up Hendrix and Patterson in a golf cart after intervening during the confrontation. Brooks followed the three in his car, the source said.

The incident was said to be a result of a brewing feud between the three players that began at a party Saturday night.

Another source told the News Sentinel that Brooks was not the instigator of the fight. A third source claimed that Brooks did not throw a punch.

"I am disappointed in Jemere and Andre," UT head basketball coach Bruce Pearl said in a statement released by UT's athletic department. "We set standards that we expect our student-athletes to adhere to both on and off the court. We will not tolerate anything less."

Brooks did not practice Monday. He was seen grimacing while holding his right shoulder as he headed to a meeting with UT head football coach Phillip Fulmer to discuss the matter.

Brooks did not have any visible marks from the altercation.

Fulmer and UT athletic director Mike Hamilton met for several minutes after practice.

Fulmer, Pearl and all of the players involved met Monday night to discuss the incident.

The captains of UT's football team met Monday to ensure that there is no retribution against Hendrix, Patterson or any member of UT's basketball team.

The altercation was first brought to the News Sentinel's attention by John Pennington of the Halls Salvage Sports Source.

This isn't the first rules infraction by Brooks or Hendrix. Brooks was suspended for the first three games of the season for various off-field incidents including traffic violations and fighting.

"We have made every effort to help Daniel work through some issues," Fulmer said in the UT release. "Unfortunately, we have decided it's in everyone's best interest to go our separate ways."

Brooks was eligible to play for the first time this season Saturday against Ole Miss but did not participate.

Brooks has played linebacker for most of his UT career. UT's coaches have discussed moving the 6-foot-4, 235-pound junior from Jackson to defensive end this season.

Despite being a highly touted recruit out of Central-Merry High School in 2003, Brooks has not started a game at UT. He has made 11 tackles in 21 games during his UT career.

Hendrix was already suspended indefinitely for an undisclosed violation of team rules. The 6-8, 233-pound forward was charged with possession of marijuana and driving without a license on August 13 in his hometown of Covington, Ga.

Hendrix transferred from Clemson to UT in 2002. He started three games for UT last season and averaged 2.7 rebounds and 2.6 points per game.

Patterson started 22 games for the Vols in 2005. He averaged 7.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
