Russo: Can Vols stop Richt's Rocky Top Express?

The past meets the present at Neyland Stadium today.

Being honored are the 1985 Vols who, of course, thrilled Big Orange fans with one of the greatest wins in school history, their 35-7 victory over Miami in the Sugar Bowl.

This year's edition has already provided UT fans with a win for the ages, but that beauty down in the Bayou would mean much more if, like that 1985 team, these Vols are able to cap off the season with a conference championship.

Enter those hunkering hounds. Like Florida, Georgia has become one of Tennessee's fiercest rivals. The Vols and Dawgs compete both on and off the field. Tennessee has had much recruiting success in the Peach State. In fact, 10 Georgia Vols are on the UT roster.

But, in recent years, Tennessee has also found itself in a dogfight for the SEC East title with a team seemingly in it for the long haul under head coach Mark Richt. The former FSU assistant has certainly added some bite to the Bulldogs' bark — leading Georgia to three wins in four tries against the Big Orange.

One of those wins was a 41-14 victory the year before last in Knoxville. His first was a heartbreaker for Vol fans as David Greene erased a late UT score with a touchdown pass.

Why dredge up such memories? Well, on a day when the past meets the present, the future depends on how this Tennessee team responds to the Richt Express, which is 4-0 and looking to make another successful stop in Rocky Top.
