Sanders might return to press box

Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer is still wrestling with the idea of moving offensive coordinator Randy Sanders into the bird's eye view of the press box.

Sanders and defensive coordinator John Chavis, handle their play-calling duties from the sidelines.

Fulmer said after Saturday's loss to Georgia the staff would get together and contemplate a change.

On Thursday, Fulmer said no talk has taken place on the matter.

"We haven't talked about it (this week)," he said. "We've talked about it in the past, but we're not there right now.

"If I did it, it would be because I thought it would help. But I don't know if that's the cure-all.

"It's our execution. It's not the plays being called. It's the execution of the plays."

While UT's defense continues to flourish, the Vols' offense has floundered much of the season.

Tennessee (3-2, 2-2 SEC) is off this weekend and won't return to the practice field until Monday to prepare for a trip to Alabama on Oct. 22. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. on WVLT.

Fulmer, a former offensive coordinator, said he preferred the vantage point from the press box.

"I always liked being up there because you could see," he said. "You were out of the emotional part of it.

"John (Chavis) prefers it down there (on the field) and Randy has preferred it down there. That's something we'll look at.

"If it can help us, right now we'll do whatever we need to do to do things better."

'Bama Series: Alabama leads the all-time series 43-37-7, but the Vols have won nine of the past 10 meetings.

The Crimson Tide beat the Vols 34-14 in 2002.

Tennessee has won the past two meetings, 51-43 in a five-overtime shootout on the road in 2003 and 17-13 at home last season.

Running woes: Fulmer again emphasized UT's desire to run the ball more often and more efficiently.

Mixed in was some frustration with continued questions about the Vols' offensive woes.

"If we throw for 300 yards and rush for 48 yards, or whatever it was, and win (against Georgia), you guys aren't saying crap," he told the media. "But we didn't win.

"We're working like heck to fix it. We need to run the ball and be more balanced."

'Bama Vols: Tennessee has four players on the 2005 roster from the state of Alabama.

Senior cornerback Jason Allen (Muscle Shoals) won't be available after dislocating his hip against Georgia. The other three are junior guard Arron Sears (Russellville), junior receiver Jayson Swain (Huntsville) and freshman defensive end Wes Brown (Athens).
