UT healthy enough to use same line again

Get ready for a rare sight Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa.

When 17th-ranked Tennessee plays No. 5-ranked Alabama, it will be with the same starting offensive line two games in a row.

That's a first this season for the Vols (3-2, 2-2 SEC).

Arron Sears (left tackle), Rob Smith (left guard), Richie Gandy (center), Cody Douglas (right guard), Albert Toeaina (right tackle), all finally healthy, will give Tennessee's line some much-needed stability.

"We looked at a couple of things (including Smith at center and Gandy at guard earlier in the week), but that's our best five," UT coach Phillip Fulmer said after practice Thursday.

Gandy suffered a knee injury in preseason, forcing some shuffling, but Fulmer hopes the continuity aspect will be a plus going up against a tough Crimson Tide defense.

"I think it will make a big difference," Fulmer said of going with the same rotation. "I hope it does.

"We'll get a good chance to see against one of the best defenses in the conference."

Establishing the run for an offense averaging 98 yards rushing a game is obviously a priority for Fulmer.

"That group hasn't had all the opportunities it needs to run the football, for different reasons," he said. "Hopefully, we can establish ourselves with some balance. That's our goal."

Good Thursday: Success in practice doesn't always translate to success on Saturday, but Fulmer was beaming about UT's work late this week.

"It was one of the sharper Thursday practices we've had," he said. "I hope it carries over into the game.

"Our team knows offensively we haven't played to our potential like we'd like to. Defensively, we'd like to continue on the path we're on."

Myers-White Moved: Adam Myers-White, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound freshman from Hamilton, Ohio, has officially made the switch from defensive back to linebacker. A number change went along with the move.

Myers-White, had been wearing No. 3 (a request made during the recruiting process), but it was a duplicate number to receiver Robert Meachem. Both those players found themselves on some special teams together, forcing a number switch.
