Russo: Synergy ... That's what Vols lack

The Vols have already lost to two key opponents in 2005 and now another October clash with the Crimson Tide is upon us.

Tough to win them when your chief rival is really yourself. It's hard to think about chompin' some Gators, putting the bite to the Dawgs or rollin' over the Tide when the questions surrounding your own team continue to mount. These are questions thought to be answered during pre-season.

Now uncertainties about the offense and special teams are making the Vols appear to be a "not so special" opponent for Alabama or any other team on the schedule. Sure, the hype will build as the annual battle with the red elephants draws near. But unless Tennessee defeats it's inner rival, it'll be those wearing crimson carrying on about what could have been another meaningful win for the Big Orange.

So what's the answer, Vol fans? How about getting back to basics. General Neyland once offered a myriad of maxims which the players are reminded of on a regular basis. I really believe it's a matter of the guys taking those guidelines to heart. Maybe no Tennessee team was closer than the National Champions of 1998, who found themselves rallying around what coach Phillip Fulmer called his synergy stick. It could very well be a lack of synergy which has kept this year's team from rising to the top.
