1985-88: After earning his degree in 1987 with one year of eligibility, Sanders is persuaded by coaching staff to play one more season to give Vols some needed depth.
1989-90: Sanders serves as volunteer coach, working with quarterbacks.
1991-92: Sanders named full-time assistant and is named wide receivers coach.
1993: Sanders named running backs coach.
1994-98: Sanders adds title of recruiting coordinator.
1998: Sanders named offensive coordinator on Dec. 1 after David Cutcliffe resigns to accept head coaching job at Ole Miss.
1999: In Sanders first game as offensive coordinator, UT defeats Florida State 23-16 in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 4 to win the national championship.
1999: UT ranks 33rd in the nation in total offense, finishes 9-3.
2000: UT ranks 57th in the nation in total offense, finishes 8-4.
2001: UT ranks 42nd in the nation in total offense, finishes 11-2.
2002: UT ranks 85th in the nation in total offense, finishes 8-5.
2003: UT ranks 67th in the nation in total offense, finishes 10-3.
2004: UT ranks 35th in the nation in total offense, finishes 10-3. Sanders prepared three inexperienced quarterbacks to make major contributions.
Oct. 31, 2005: Sanders steps down from his position as offensive coordinator but will remain quarterbacks coach for the rest of the season. UT ranks 99th in the nation out of 119 Division I-A teams in total offense.
