Riggs has surgery on ankle

Tennessee tailback Gerald Riggs Jr. underwent surgery Monday at the University of Tennessee Medical Center to repair torn ligaments in his right ankle.

Riggs suffered the injury and a fractured leg late in UT's game at Alabama on Oct. 22.

The play ended Riggs' college career and left him 13th on UT's all-time rushing list with 1,893 yards.

"Our staff will work with Gerald as he looks to advance his career past the University of Tennessee," head athletic trainer Keith Clements said.

UT team orthopedist Dr. Greg Mathien performed the operation following an examination with Riggs under anesthesia.

Moved Up: UT's Nov. 12 homecoming date against Memphis is being televised on a pay-per-view basis.

Kickoff has been moved to 2 p.m.

Fans can contact their local cable system starting Nov. 7 to order the game and receive pricing information.

The game also is expected to be made available to Tennessee Dish Network and DirecTV subscribers, as well as C-band dish owners.

ESPN has the option to offer the game to fans outside the state via the ESPN GamePlan package.

The Replacement: Fulmer said he won’t rule out going outside the "Tennessee Family’’ to replace Randy Sanders. Fulmer wouldn’t speculate on the possibility of bringing back former UT offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe, who left the Vols to take the Ole Miss head coaching job prior to the 1998 national championship game.

"I’m not going to get into that,’’ Fulmer said. "You look around the country at the top teams; they run the same type of plays. We’ve won a lot of games here with a very good system. When things don’t work, people think it’s antiquated. When it works, it’s innovative.

"All I’ve done since I’ve been the head coach here is do the best job that I could, and I’ll keep doing that.’’
