SEC East notebook: September 6

The game was supposed to be close, maybe even an upset.

But in the end, Georgia quarterback D.J. Shockley proved he might just be this year's Jason Campbell.

Campbell, after struggling as a starter for three years at Auburn, became a first-round NFL draft choice after last season when he led the Tigers to a 13-0 record.

Shockley, a senior who has sat behind David Greene, the winningest quarterback in Division I-A the last three years, threw for 289 yards and five TDs, and ran for 85 yards and another TD in just 2 quarters of a 48-13 beatdown of No. 18 Boise State.

"I think this is going to justify a lot of things for a lot of people," Shockley said. "A lot of people knew I could run but didn't know how I'd do passing or running the team. This is a game people can point to and say, 'He can win for the University of Georgia.'"

Payback time?

First-year South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier takes his team to Athens on Saturday to play Georgia. In Spurrier's only visit to Athens as Florida's coach during the '90s, the Gators beat the Bulldogs 52-17 after an assistant coach told Spurrier that no visiting team had ever scored 50 points in Sanford Stadium. Spurrier recalled that Florida's final touchdown came with the backups in during the last two minutes. "The fans didn't seem to be mad about it," Spurrier said. "They only had about 5,000 left in the stadium."... Florida's running game, which finished with 91 yards rushing in a 32-14 season opening win over Wyoming, gets a boost this week with the return of DeShawn Wynn. Wynn was suspended for the season opener.

Cutler in command

In a season opening 24-20 win at Wake Forest, Vanderbilt senior quarterback Jay Cutler threw 38 times and ran 10. While Cutler obviously has to carry his team, the Commodores need to find more playmakers because Cutler may not survive the season putting himself in the line of fire that many times. ... After Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson lost three fumbles, including a key one late in Sunday's 31-24 loss to Louisville, UK coach Rich Brooks second-guessed himself for Woodson's lack of contact work during preseason practice. "Maybe we should have had some more live work with him," Brooks said. "But with our situation at quarterback, that was a chance we really didn't feel like we could take."
