The Razorbacks, with three tailbacks rushing for more than 100 yards each, ran for 483 yards in Saturday's sloppy 49-17 season opening victory over Missouri State.
Texas is No. 2 (418 against Louisiana-Lafayette), followed by Wisconsin (388 vs. Bowling Green), Michigan State (354 vs. Kent State) and Missouri (317 vs. Arkansas State).
Arkansas, despite losing four fumbles, was led by freshman Felix Jones who gained 137; sophomore Peyton Hillis had 135 and senior De'Arrius Howard of West Memphis added 120.
"I thought the offensive line did an outstanding job," Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said. "(Fullback) Brandon Kennedy did an outstanding job. You don't hear his name too much, because he's not going to have that many stats, but he's really important to the offense."
Helping Fats
Late last week after Hurricane Katrina flooded New Orleans, LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell hosted 23 family members and friends in his Baton Rouge apartment, including music legend Fats Domino, who happens to be the grandfather of Russell's girlfriend Chantel Brimmer, a junior at LSU. "He's a joking guy," Russell said. "He asked me if I had his heart medicine (which Russell retrieved at a drug store at 2 a.m. Thursday). He said, 'You scared?' I was like, 'No sir, scared of what?' He said, 'I tell you what, if I don't get a chance to get my medicine, you better be scared because they're going to be dragging my dead butt out of here.".Before LSU moved its upcoming home game on Saturday to Arizona State, the SEC offered LSU the use of Miss's Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. LSU declined. Alabama defensive tackle Justin Britt doesn't deny he has a mean streak. He gets it honestly from older brothers Wesley (a former Alabama All-SEC offensive lineman) and Taylor (a Tide senior offensive lineman). Wesley got in plenty of fights in practice at Alabama, and Taylor was arrested and suspended as a sophomore for head-butting a police officer during an incident outside a Tuscaloosa bar. Justin said his meanness comes from "being beat up my whole life by my brothers and sisters."... Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville liked the toughness shown by Brandon Cox, his new starting quarterback, in Saturday's season opening 23-14 loss to Georgia Tech. "Brandon turned into a leader," Tuberville said.
