When the Vols practiced Monday, Smith was back at left guard alongside left tackle Arron Sears, and that's where they're expected to be when Tennessee plays at Florida on Saturday.
"I think me and Arron together, we can move some people," Smith said Tuesday.
Saturday would be a perfect time to move some people.
The Vols go for their third straight victory at The Swamp. In 13 of the last 15 games between the Vols and Gators, the team that has rushed for more yards has won the game.
"Facts are facts," UT tailback Gerald Riggs Jr. said. "You go back and look at the stat sheets, look at the history of this game. Whoever's been able to run the ball, and take control of the clock and be physical is going to be the winner of this game, so we've got to make sure we're on top of our game and that we get that accomplished."
Smith was moved from left guard to center for the Sept. 3 opener against UAB because of a knee injury to starting center Richie Gandy. Redshirt freshman Ramon Foster started at left guard next to Sears.
Gandy was back at practice Monday and Smith was back at guard
"I got out there and I didn't feel like a freshman (Monday)," Smith said. "I didn't feel like I was totally thinking and worrying about stuff. It felt really good, just putting that left hand down and coming off the ball and not thinking about nothing."
Not that Smith had a bad day at center in the 17-10 season-opening victory over UAB.
Smith got high grades in his first game at center, but there's nothing like playing your natural position.
"I like left guard more," Smith said. "I mean, I don't have to think at all about nothing. Everything's just natural. It's just reacting to everything."
Smith first played alongside Sears last season when injuries forced the Vols to shuffle players around the line.
Sears, the most versatile of the Vols' offensive linemen, started four of the last six games at left tackle.
Smith says the left side seemed to click when he was alongside Sears.
"Ever since last year, even when he came in for Michael (Munoz), we always played together real good," Smith said. "I personally think it could be huge, me and him together."
There's no better time or place than The Swamp.
