LSU's Williams fumes after OT loss to Vols

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Kyle Williams is waiting for a punch line, although he could've done without this bit of humor.

Williams, LSU's senior defensive tackle and a recognized team leader, called the Tigers' team wide second-half meltdown in a 30-27 overtime loss to Tennessee a joke and it was clear he was in no mood for this brand of comedy.

"I thought that we did the things we needed to do in the first half, and I don't know what it was execution or whatever, but in the second half it didn't get done," said Williams, who was visibly fuming after the No. 10-ranked Vols hung 17 fourth-quarter points on the fourth-ranked Tigers and then rode tailback Gerald Riggs to the victory in overtime.

Asked why Tennessee's previously anemic offense got healthy against LSU, Williams went straight to the heart of the matter.

"I don't know -- bad play," he snapped. "Not doing what you're supposed to do. Not making plays. Making stupid plays. Bad play. Them taking advantage of us playing bad."

If Williams seems stunned, there's good reason.

Coming into the game, the Vols (2-1, 1-1 SEC) ranked last in the nation in scoring offense and had produced only one touchdown in their last six quarters.

That drought extended to eight quarters when LSU zipped to a 21-0 halftime lead.

In those first 30 minutes, Tennessee looked dazed and confused most of the time when they had the ball. On the Vols' first 10 offensive snaps they had 0 yards. By halftime, UT had scratched out only 90 yards on 38 plays.

"We came out and got after them," Williams said. "We shut them down in the first half, but there are two halves."
