Pittman gets look at fullback

OXFORD, Miss. - There was a Jamal Pittman sighting at practice Tuesday at Ole Miss, but it was in an unfamiliar place.

In yet another move at trying to get the best 11 players on the field, the Rebels tried out their former starting tailback at fullback.

''It's just giving him an opportunity to play,'' Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron said. ''It's looking like Mico (McSwain) and Antonio (Turner) are going to be the guy's there (at tailback). We just want to put our best guys on the field and give them an opportunity.''

Pittman, a junior from Columbia, Miss., started the season opener at Memphis, running nine times for 19 yards. He hasn't had a carry since. In fact, Pittman hasn't taken a snap since the first game as Orgeron began looking for backs with more speed and the ability to break long runs.

Pittman said he was fine with his position switch.

''I'm going to be a team player about the whole thing,'' he said. ''Anything I can do to help the team, if it's at center, I'll do it. No big deal. I came here to help the team win. If that's what it takes, that's what I'll do, with a smile on my face.''

Changes On Offensive Line: While Ole Miss rushed for a season-high 162 yards and allowed just one sack in last Saturday's loss to Wyoming, the Rebels are still looking for ways to solidify their offensive line.

This week, sophomore Darryl Harris will move from his starting center spot to left guard, and senior Tony Bonds will take over the starting center spot.

''Darryl was really good at guard for us in the spring,'' Orgeron said. ''We feel he's not performing at center the way we'd like him, too. We'll put him at guard and see if that combination works.''

After rotating eight offensive linemen, offensive line coach George DeLeone said it's time to get the five best players on the field.

''We want to get more of a cohesion with the five guys working together,'' DeLeone said. ''We're still investigating some possibilities. We're getting closer. Obviously, the pain of the loss diminishes anything positive that came out of the game. But as a coach, you have to step back realistically and look at what happened and see what we did good and what we need to improve on.''

Orgeron On Vols: Tennessee's thrilling 30-27 overtime win at LSU in which the Vols overcame a 21-0 deficit, was very impressive to Orgeron, who already knew he had his hands full preparing his team for Saturday's game in Knoxville.

''They competed,'' Orgeron said. ''They're a very talented football team. They stayed in there until the end. I was really impressed with the way their defense played in the fourth quarter. (Gerald) Riggs is a very talented back, very physical.''

Injury Report: Redshirt freshman Jamarca Sanford, who missed last week's game with a knee injury, was back on the field in full gear Tuesday, running with the first team defense.

Receiver Mario Hill was in shorts, and did not participate in any contact work. He also missed last week's game with a hamstring injury.

Orgeron added that he doubts linebacker Patrick Willis will be back from his broken finger and sprained knee.
