Rebels to give McSwain more work

OXFORD, Miss. - On Ole Miss's 10th offensive play Saturday against Wyoming, tailback Mico McSwain took a handoff, ran right, off tackle Tre Stallings, and outran the Wyoming defense for a 60-yard touchdown run.

It took 13 more plays, and four possessions, before McSwain saw the ball again. He picked up 11 yards, but it was nullified by a holding penalty.

Trailing 13-7 at the half, the redshirt freshman had one carry for 60 yards. McSwain got six more carries in the second half, finishing with a career-high 114 yards. In addition to being disappointed in the Rebels' 24-14 loss to the Cowboys, McSwain couldn't help but wonder why he had just seven carries. It's a stat that left many scratching their heads.

''I kind of got frustrated because they weren't putting me in enough, but it works like that sometimes,'' McSwain said.

He shouldn't have that problem after Saturday's game at Tennessee. Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron has vowed to go exclusively with McSwain and true freshman Antonio Turner as his tailbacks, much to the delight of McSwain.

''We're really positive about the play of Mico McSwain,'' Orgeron said. ''He brings a lot to our offense. We need to get him the football more in all aspects of the offense. I'm really excited about the play of our freshman running back, Antonio Turner. I thought he ran the ball very hard, and he fits exactly what we want in the offense as a running back.''

McSwain gives the Rebels what they've lacked since Joe Gunn left after the 2001 season - a back with enough speed and moves to break a long run.

McSwain has done it with limited touches. Among his 19 carries this season, he has touchdown runs of 53 and 60 yards, as well as a 29-yarder.

McSwain is seventh in the SWC in rushing at 72 yards per game despite averaging six carries a game. His unheard of 11.4 yards-per-carry average gives McSwain a legitimate excuse for wanting the ball more.

''I think we're going to put in some more plays and get me a little more involved than I have been,'' he said.

For the most part, McSwain has been limited to sweeps and runs off tackle. Against Wyoming he ran a draw as well as a couple of other runs between the tackles.

Look for McSwain to get more carries, both inside and outside against the Vols.
