Don't look for offense to show off

Cutcliffe plans to play 'I've got a secret' game

Don't get too excited about seeing Tennessee's new-look offense Saturday.

It's not happening.

New offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe said he isn't going to tip his hand just for Orange and White Game entertainment purposes.

"Just being honest, and I probably shouldn't even say this," Cutcliffe said Thursday, "but we're not going to run much of our offense at all -- very, very, very little.

"We're going to minimize it to the point we'll run some things we probably won't even run in the fall."

There's no way Cutcliffe was going to give opposing defensive coordinators five or six months to study film of his offensive schemes.

"I'm a little paranoid that way," he said. "A lot of people watch. A lot gets out there and we're doing a lot of things differently.

"We're going to really limit it from a formation standpoint, a passing game standpoint and probably only take in four or five runs and see if we can execute, be tougher and block and tackle."

Cutcliffe and defensive coordinator John Chavis took turns Thursday giving a review of highlights and concerns as spring practice comes to an end Saturday.

Rosters for the 2 p.m. Orange and White Game were released and Most Improved Players for spring practice announced.

Cutcliffe will coach the Orange team -- led by freshman quarterback Jonathan Crompton along with nine projected starters.

Chavis will coach the White team featuring junior quarterback Erik Ainge and 10 projected starters.

As far as concerns and highlights, both coordinators said the Vols have come a long way in 15 days of spring practice, but there're miles to travel before California comes to town for the season opener Sept. 2.

Cutcliffe said the most eye-opening aspect of his work this spring was "how far we had to go."

The former Vol assistant and Ole Miss coach has spent a lot of time retraining the work habits of UT players.

"Understanding how hard you have to work, understanding tempo, just getting reps," Cutcliffe said. "I'm an impatient person and we had to raise that bar fast.

"That surprised me. And then the confidence level; I've been around some Tennessee teams that were pretty confident. You've got to earn being good, and when you earn being good, you can be a confident football player."

Defensively, Chavis is obviously most comfortable with his experienced secondary and most concerned with his inexperienced front four.

Jonathan Wade, Inky Johnson, Jonathan Hefney, Antwan Stewart, Roshaun Fellows and Demetrice Morley make up a deep, versatile defensive backfield.

Up front, senior Justin Harrell is the anchor at tackle and the search goes on for depth and two new defensive ends.

"Obviously, up front was our biggest question," Chavis said. "I think we've made some steps in the right direction.

"Are we there? No, not by a long shot. I don't think you ever come out of spring practice and get all those questions answered."

Junior right tackle Steven Jones earned most-improved recognition for the offensive unit.

"From day one, even when we were out there in shorts, his demeanor was what you want in a football player," Cutcliffe said. "He has worked extremely hard and continued to improve every week."

Defensively, the most-improved award went to senior cornerback Jonathan Wade and freshman tackle Dan Williams.

"I think Jonathan really became a technician," Chavis said. "He has grown, he has matured and he's more physical.

"Dan Williams hasn't played a down for us, but he has covered tremendous, tremendous miles since he came here last fall."

Injury list: Players you won't see on the field Saturday: Jayson Swain, Arian Foster, Jared Hostetter, Arron Sears, Xavier Mitchell, Vladimir Richard, Montario Hardesty, Jerod Mayo, Slick Shelley, LaMarcus Coker, Antonio Gaines, Phillip Tritapoe and Turk McBride.
