So far, he's living up to that pledge.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound wide receiver from Franklin High School was working the room like a late-night talk show host during UT's camp earlier this month.
"I think a lot of those kids seem really excited about Tennessee," Campbell said. "I think we've got just as good a chance as anyone else. By just talking to them, they seem really interested."
In particular, Campbell was honed in on Catholic athlete Harrison Smith and Alcoa defensive end Rae Sykes. Campbell said Sykes, who is often soft-spoken, was tough to read. Sykes is considering UT and LSU.
"I don't know what he wants to do," Campbell said. "He didn't give me any clues."
When Campbell wasn't recruiting, he was soaking in the campus environment, his new home.
"It was cool," Campbell said. "I basically gave myself a tour of the campus. It's weird because people know who you are.
"I actually signed an autograph. I've never signed an autograph before. I said 'Are you serious?' "
Some of the camp participants also recognized Campbell. When they realized he was UT's most recent commitment, he was suddenly the man to beat.
"Then everybody wanted to go against me one-one-one," Campbell said with a chuckle. "I went a little longer than I planned to."
Campbell's recruiting efforts kick into full gear again on April 29, during a Nike camp in Athens, Ga. The target is Golden Tate from Pope John Paul II in Hendersonville, arguably the top prospect in the state.
"I still have to work on Golden and see what he's talking about," Campbell said. "I'm going to try to do a little recruiting."
