Besides a driving under the influence charge levied against freshman Lee Smith, Fulmer was dealing with a player in the hospital and another deciding to leave Vols.
Tennessee redshirt freshman Slick Shelley remains at UT Medical Center after being admitted for abdominal pains Tuesday.
The wide receiver continues to be evaluated and could be released today. Several UT coaches and players visited with Shelley on Wednesday.
"Slick is going to be recovering two to four weeks from some abdominal surgery," Fulmer said Wednesday night. "He should be back and ready to go by the time we start playing."
Also, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Malcom Rawls informed Fulmer and the UT coaching staff on Wednesday he plans to transfer.
"He just came in to see me and said he was tired of playing football," Fulmer said. "He said he might consider going to Morehouse or some smaller school and I told him I wished him well.
"We want guys here who want to play and compete at this level. That's as simple as it was."
Rawls, a former standout from Memphis East High School, was listed as a backup right guard coming out of spring practice.
In other news, Rob Duncanson has been named associate athletic trainer for football.
Duncanson comes to UT after four years on staff at South Florida. He also has experience with the New York Jets and the Louisville Fire of the Arena2 Football League.
The Vols also added Dan Hamilton as an assistant to their strength and conditioning staff.
Hamilton has worked with strength coach Johnny Long as a volunteer and graduate member for four years.
"Dan has worked alongside our rehabilitation and training staffs with all the athletes who have had injuries and surgeries to really make his mark," Long said in a release. "He was thrown into the fire that year and worked hand-in-hand to get those athletes back on the field."
Hamilton graduated from Ohio State in 2002 and earned his master's degree in human performance and sports studies from UT in 2004.
