Athlete Broyles includes UT among his college options

Ryan Broyles wants to be a man of his word.

The cornerback/wide receiver from Norman (Okla.) High School has received scholarship offers from 11 schools, including Tennessee, Arkansas, South Carolina, Oklahoma State, Texas A & M and Texas Tech.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Broyles said the difficult decision constantly weighs heavily on his mind.

"Just getting closer to the season," he said, "there’s more pressure. It’s not too bad, but it’s getting there."

"I just try to keep my mind off it really. I try to stay out of the situation."

Broyles said he’s making sure to be careful during the process. He said he won’t make a commitment until he’s 100 percent sure.

"That’s a big deal," he said. "I want to be able to give my word if they’re giving their word. I don’t want to disappoint anyone."

Broyles said he plans to take official visits to UT, Texas A&M and Texas Tech in the fall. He said he will take his two other visits but doesn’t know where.

Broyles has visited Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Oklahoma unofficially this summer. He said a visit to Knoxville should give him a better idea how UT measures up against schools in the Big 12.

"That’s real important," he said. "I couldn’t make an unofficial visit there. I need to take an official visit because it’s so far away."

Broyles said he’s had strong interest in UT since the Vols offered him a scholarship in May. He said he’s been impressed by UT’s defensive style and winning tradition.

"I like the whole atmosphere," he said. "It’s a big school to me. The SEC is big to me."

Broyles will most likely attend a school in the SEC or Big 12. He said the SEC has an advantage because of its defensive strength.

"Defense is demanding in the SEC," he said. "That’s a big deal to me because I play cornerback."

Broyles could also play wide receiver in college. In eight games last season he had 18 catches for 370 yards and five touchdowns.

While UT is recruiting Broyles at cornerback, he said Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Arkansas are recruiting him to play on either side of the ball. He said South Carolina is recruiting him to play on offense only.

Oklahoma State has recruited him the hardest, Broyles said, adding that he appreciates the Cowboys’ strong pursuit but won’t use that against the other schools.

"I receive a lot of letters and text messages from them," he said. "It’s pretty good but I know a lot of schools work in different ways with their schedules."

Broyles said he had previously planned to make a decision before the end of his high school season. Broyles said he has no timetable.

"There’s no way to tell," he said. "Whenever I know, I will do it."
