Notre Dame gains ground on Donald

Notre Dame has Chris Donald rearranging his schedule.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker from Huntingdon High School visited Notre Dame the last weekend of July. Donald had planned to announce a decision between Tennessee and Notre Dame before his senior season begins, but his trip to South Bend, Ind., appears to have changed his mind.

Donald told The Jackson Sun on Tuesday he will "probably" wait to announce a decision until he takes official visits to UT and Notre Dame this fall.

"I need some more time to think about things, but I don't really know how long it will be," said Donald, who was selected the News Sentinel’s No. 1-rated prospect in the state last month. "I just feel like I need to (wait). They're both schools I would want to play at.

"I just want to make sure I make the best decision for myself."

Donald was close to committing to UT before he left for Notre Dame. The visit, however, went better than expected.

"I was hoping the trip was going to be bad so I could just commit to UT, but it turned out to be a pretty good trip," Donald said. "I enjoyed the surroundings and the coaches."

Donald has continually called UT his leader and said he was "90 percent" sure he would commit to the Vols before his visit to Notre Dame. Donald now says the two schools "are pretty much equal."

"I’ve always wanted to be a Volunteer," Donald told the News Sentinel in April. "When they first started recruiting me, I was amazed. I was proud. My hard work was paying off."

Donald isn’t the only in-state prospect with strong interest in Notre Dame.

Catholic High School star Harrison Smith is considering several schools but told the News Sentinel last month that UT and Notre Dame lead for his services.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Smith, who is being recruited as a safety, linebacker and fullback, was named the third-best prospect in the state by the News Sentinel.
