Garretson declined to comment but said there might be an opportunity for him to return in the future.
Garretson is the second East Tennessee product dismissed this month. Powell's Lee Smith was dismissed Aug. 2 following a charge of driving under the influence.
Garretson was considered a bit of an unknown when he committed to UT in November. He was known as a massive linebacker at Morristown East High School. The 6-foot-3, 277-pounder was said to have run a 4.7 in the 40-yard dash.
Alabama and Kentucky had shown interest but UT was the first to offer a scholarship.
UT has 14 true freshmen on campus from its 2006 signing class. Defensive lineman/linebacker Gerald Williams and athlete Stephaun Raines are awaiting approval by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Out of 21 signees, one will grayshirt, two were not academically eligible and two have been dismissed.
