Morley might provide an edge with kick blocks

Scrimmage reflects UT's attention to special teams

Tennessee defensive back Demetrice Morley blocked two field goals during a scrimmage Saturday at Neyland Stadium. That’s nothing new.

The sophomore said he blocked four in a high school game.

"I’m used to coming off the edge," Morley said. "That’s something I like. The key to be good at that is timing."

Morley is proving to be a versatile player. He also has practiced at wide receiver this fall.

Punter Britton Colquitt said he has seen a change in special teams since coordinators John Chavis and David Cutcliffe began overseeing the efforts following the 2005 season.

"There’s a lot more energy is the biggest thing," the sophomore said. "It’s more special to this team than it has been."

Junior defensive back Jonathan Hefney said Morley is making "big-time" strides.

"He’s a playmaker," Hefney said. "He knows what to do. I told him he’s just got to go out there and be a leader now with everyone else.

"When you get in the game just go out there and play. Don’t have any worries. He’s doing that and making all kinds of plays."

Mapu’s Mentality: J.T. Mapu said he’s beginning to pick up the pace of the game since taking a two-year break from football to pursue a mission trip.

"Everything starts to come back," the junior defensive tackle said. "I’ve been real happy with being able to pick up things that we used to do.

"Being able to recognize the plays and getting to where I need to be and being in good position to make plays, I think that’s something I’ve been able to retain over the past two years I’ve been gone."

Yancey’s Yardage: Tailback David Yancey was the leading rusher in Saturday’s scrimmage. The senior had 66 yards on eight carries.

"I try to bring some energy to the field, a little swagger, a little positive energy to the team to feed off," Yancey said. "We (seniors) had a meeting with Coach (Phillip) Fulmer earlier (Saturday). We talked about having fun.

"Sometimes you go out here and work hard and you’ve got all these plays to remember, but sometimes in between that you might lose the enjoyment of the game. That’s what that was, just trying to have some excitement and have the team come out and have fun. It’s like old Pop Warner days."
