The violation occurred because the wide receivers coach spoke to a group of alumni in Memphis without following UT's formal process of approval. Taylor was forced to donate the money he was paid by the group to charity.
Taylor said he thought he had been cleared to speak at the event by a member of UT's football program. He said he has been told the violation is "very minor."
By speaking to the group, Taylor violated bylaw 11.3.2.2, which concerns supplemental pay provisions.
The violation is not expected to result in any sort of punitive action from the NCAA.
UT is expected to release a statement on the matter later this week. Head coach Phillip Fulmer had no comment.
