Winning campaign for MVP Rogan
With something to prove, Fulton's 'Mr. Football' runs for 208 yards, 2 TDs
Taped above the Fulton High School stands was a sign with Rogan's picture and the words "Our Mr. Football."
Rogan decided right then it was time to live up to those sentiments.
The Falcons' senior set a TSSAA single-season scoring record and rushed for 208 yards and two TDs on Saturday as Fulton beat David Lipscomb 24-14 for the Class 3A state football title.
For Rogan, it was a sweet form of justice.
The 5-foot-11, 183-pound senior and his Fulton coaches felt slighted when Rogan lost out on Mr. Football's Class 3A Back of the Year award earlier in the week. Harrison Smith of rival Catholic took home the award.
"I wanted to come out here today and prove to everybody why I should have gotten it," Rogan said. "It took a little while to get going, but we came through in the second half."
Especially Rogan.
Held to 41 yards on eight carries in the first half, Rogan ran wild in the second.
He had 25 carries for 167 yards and two scores in the second half.
The two touchdowns gave him an unofficial state record for single-season points with 296 (42 rushing TDs, four passing TDs, one return TD and seven two-point conversions). Kelsey Williams of Humboldt had 290 points in 1995. Rogan finished his four-year career with 566 points.
Already committed to the University of Tennessee, Rogan got word of a passing ACT test score on Tuesday.
"I can't wait to get (to UT)," he said. "It's going to be fun."
One of the first people to greet him as he came off the Middle Tennessee State field with his BlueCross Bowl Offensive MVP trophy was UT offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe.
Still, Rogan was thinking more about winning three state championships with the Falcons in the past four years.
"This is the best one of the three," he said. "I know I'm going out on top.
"When we lost that game (to Catholic in the second round of the playoffs) last year, we said right then we were going to come back and win it this year. That's what we did."
Rogan could tell the Mustangs were starting to wear down in the second half.
"We knew they were a good defensive team, but watching film we knew we just had to wear them out," Rogan said. "We came out stronger in the second half and the line did a great job."
His 18-yard TD run put Fulton up 16-0 with 2:48 to go in the third quarter. His 7-yard TD with 3:57 left in the game helped seal the victory.
At the same time, he sealed one of the greatest careers ever for a high school running back in Knoxville.
He finished with three state championship trophies, 89 career touchdowns, 2,668 yards rushing yards this season and 5,061 career-rushing yards.
"What about my boy Rogan," Fulton coach Buck Coatney said. "If there's a better player in Tennessee, I'd like to see him.
"Look what he did today. He sucked it up with eight people in the box all day and just did a great job."
