Martin plans decision in January
Martin, a defensive end from LaSalle High School in Cincinnati, visited Tennessee this weekend and said he plans to choose between the Vols, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Florida some time in January. He's already taken official visits to the other three schools and said no school stands out.
"My head is a whirlwind right now," he said.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Martin went into his visit at UT wanting to get a better understanding of the program. He had taken two unofficial visits to Knoxville but said he didn't spent a lot of time with the coaches or players.
"I got to meet a lot of people and really get to know the coaches and get a good feel for Knoxville," he said of his official visit Sunday. "There are a lot of nice people there. It's a great place to be."
Martin said he talked with UT's coaches about the depth chart at defensive end. He said there's an opportunity to contribute right away.
"Right now I'm not really sure what I want to do with my freshman year," he said, "but having the chance to play early is always a great option. No matter where I'm going to go there's going to be hard work so I don't know what to do with it yet."
Martin was hosted by senior defensive lineman Turk McBride. Martin said the Camden, N.J., native recounted his past four years to give him an idea about life in Knoxville.
"He said he had a great experience," Martin said. "As a freshman he got to play. That's kind of like the same situation I'm in if I go in there. He said that was fun for him."
Martin said he plans to sit down with his family during the Christmas break and go through the selection process.
"I'll probably put everything on the table and write down the pros and cons of all the schools," he said. "Hopefully some time in January I'll have everything worked out where I can just know what school I want to go to."
Martin said he has enjoyed the recruiting process, but he's glad he will soon have his college future decided.
"It was a good experience," he said, "but a lot of stuff came along with that. I'm just happy the dead period's coming up soon so I can get my thoughts together."
