UT signs Willingham

Junior college star DeAngelo Willingham from College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif., told UT coaches Saturday he was committed.

"They saw how aggressive I was," the 6-foot, 205-pound cornerback from Calhoun, S.C., said of how his junior college career improved his recruiting stature. "They were surprised by my run support and bump-and-run."

If he proves ready, Willingham could play a key role in UT's defensive backfield immediately. The Vols likely have to replace their top three cornerbacks from 2006: seniors Jonathan Wade and Antwan Stewart and junior Inky Johnson, who suffered what is thought to be a career-ending injury last season.

Junior college defensive back could help fill one of three vacated positions in UT’s defensive backfield. Registered five interceptions, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble last season. Also returned a blocked field goal 90 yards for a touchdown in 2006.
