Changes of heart damage UT recruiting

Virginia Tech beats Vols for Hill; Winfield commits to S. Carolina

Tennessee’s 2007 football recruiting class suffered two setbacks on Thursday.

The first came when Alonzo Winfield, a safety/linebacker from Carver High School in Winston-Salem, N.C., decided not to honor his commitment to Tennessee and will attend South Carolina, according to his father Chris Pauling.

The second came when Cris Hill from Highland Springs (Va.) High School, who chose Virginia Tech over the Vols, according to his head coach, Scott Burton.

Hill, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound cornerback, took an official visit to UT last weekend. Before the visit, he said the Vols and Hokies were tied for his services.

Hill’s decision can’t come as a shock. Hill had eliminated several schools from contention because of a long distance from home. UT is a seven- to eight-hour drive from Highland Springs. Virginia Tech is just over three hours away.

UT’s coaches had to be concerned about Winfield when he decided to take an official visit to South Carolina last week. The 6-foot, 200-pounder committed to UT in June. He informed UT’s coaches of his change of heart on Wednesday night.

"He’s been thinking about it for a while," Pauling told Josh Ward of GoVolsXtra.com.

Pauling said his son won’t take any more official visits and is firmly committed.

If there’s any position the Vols could afford some losses, it’s defensive back. The Vols have seven committed prospects that could end up in the secondary.

The Vols have 23 commitments. National Signing Day is Feb. 7.
