Davis still considering UT visit
Davis, a defensive end from West Monroe (La.) High School, said he's trying to decide between Tennessee, Auburn and Florida State for his final two visits. He's already visited Louisville, LSU and Oklahoma.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Davis has been interested in UT since early in the recruiting process. He scheduled numerous unofficial visits to Knoxville during the summer, but he had to cancel each one because of transportation issues.
If Davis decides to take an official visit to UT, most of the credit will belong to UT assistant coach Trooper Taylor, who's built a strong relationship with Davis.
"Coach Troop, he's just an excellent guy away from coaching or football," Davis said. "He's an excellent person. He's never steered me wrong. I really don't see a reason why not to take a visit to Tennessee, but I'm still unsure."
Davis said he has questions about UT's depth at defensive end. He said he would like a chance to play early, but he's willing to wait his turn.
"I'm a quick learner," he said, "but better yet I'm a visual learner to where if I see someone doing something correctly I feel like I can go in there and do it better than them just from watching that person. Sitting out a year or at the most two wouldn't be a factor at all."
Davis said he hopes to decide which two schools he'll visit by the week of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which he will play in on Jan. 6.
One influence on the schools Davis decides to visit will be his friend Ahmad Paige, a wide receiver from Sterlington (La.) High.
Davis said Paige has de-committed from Florida State, and if Paige decides to completely eliminate the Seminoles, so will Davis.
Davis said he believes he and Paige, who visited UT on Nov. 4, could end up a package deal.
"By him de-committing it's starting to open a lot of doors for him as well as me," Davis said. "We're really pretty much just shopping around for what would be the best school for us."
Davis said he won't decide which school is the best fit for him until he's finished with his visits. He said he could wait until National Signing Day on Feb. 7 to make a decision.
Until then, Davis said he's trying to appreciate the recruiting process instead of allowing it to become a hassle.
"One day this is all going to be over," he said. "Just enjoy the ride. A lot of players out there are hoping to get a phone call from the local school or just anybody."
While the phone calls have been tiresome at times, Davis said he's glad he's received them. He said he's seen himself grow up through the process.
"I think this is a decision that's probably going to help every guy going through the recruiting process mature from a kid to a man," he said. "This is one of the biggest decisions you'll make in your entire you life. It's where you'll be by yourself for the next five years."
