Austin-East's Anderson receives offer from UT

Add Anthony Anderson's name to the growing list of major-college prospects in the class of 2007.

The Austin-East High School junior defensive back became the third local player to draw a scholarship offer from the University of Tennessee in advance of his senior season.

Roadrunners coach Kwayu Graham said Wednesday that the Vols offered Anderson during UT's Junior Day last Saturday.

Miami (Fla.) is also showing strong interest in Anderson, Graham said.

Catholic junior Harrison Smith has already been offered by the Vols, as has Alcoa's Rae Sykes.

Smith is a 6-foot-1, 205-pound defensive back, while Sykes is a 6-foot-5, 240-pound defensive end.

Sykes has already received several offers, including Notre Dame and LSU.

Anderson (6-2, 175) had seven interceptions for the Roadrunners last season, three of which he returned for touchdowns. He also plays wide receiver and returns kicks.

The class of 2007 also includes a pair of Powell linemen in Jared McGaha (6-5, 275) and John Bruhin (6-5, 310), both of whom are considered Division I prospects.

Alcoa receiver Kyrus Lanxter (6-3, 180) has already received offers from West Virginia and Louisville.

Six area players signed Division I scholarships on Wednesday.

Drew Edwards covers high school sports. He may be reached at 865-342-6274.
