Ref who ejected Pearl won't officiate at West

The referee who ejected Tennessee men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl from a high school basketball game last week won't be back at West High School this season.

Shane Mynatt is not scheduled to work any more West games this season, including the District 3-AAA tournament, a supervisor from the Knox South Officials Association said Wednesday.

"Had it been at Fulton and had it been the Vanderbilt coach who had someone playing, we would have done the same thing," said Kenny Coulter, who supervises Knox South referees along with Barry Mathis and Jerry McCarter. "It so happens that Mr. Mynatt isn't scheduled to work West. If he had a game scheduled there in the next few weeks, we'd probably send him to another site."

That treatment is typical any time an official has ejected a player, coach or spectator during a game. Coulter -- who played basketball at UT 1957-59 -- said his group typically handles between two and four ejections a season.

"We keep them away and the problem disappears," Coulter said. "If you send them back into that situation, it's hard for the schools and the people, as well as the official to be fair in their evaluations."

Coaches are also allowed to "scratch" officials -- keep them from working their games -- with enough advance notice, which stems from a Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association policy.

On Wednesday, Pearl discussed the incident, along with the No. 11 Vols' win over Kentucky, on ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" with hosts Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser.

Pearl was asked if his ejection, which happened while Pearl watched his son Steven guide the Rebels to an overtime victory, was a "cheap shot."

The first-year Tennessee coach agreed that his ejection was unwarranted.

Coulter stressed Pearl was not vulgar in any way towards Mynatt.

"It certainly wasn't any foul language or cursing involved in the incident," Coulter said.
