Glenville High School has produced countless college prospects over the years. This year, the Cleveland, Ohio, school has three players who plan on going to the same school.
Defensive end/tight end Robert Rose said he and receiver Raymond Small and offensive lineman Bryant Browning plan to play football together on the next level. Rose and Small have visited UT. Browning is scheduled to visit Jan. 13.
Rose is participating in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. The all-star event invites the top 80 prospects in the nation.
Pulling the three Glenville stars away from Ohio State will be a challenge. It's easy to notice a unique reaction when Rose talks about the Buckeyes.
"Ohio State, obviously," Rose said with a chuckle when asked what schools he was considering, "USC and Tennessee."
Does that answer mean Ohio State leads for his services?
"You could say that because I'm from Ohio," said Rose, who maintains he's still undecided. "Everybody already thinks that I'm going to Ohio State anyway so I just smile. It's funny to me. It's like people trying to read my mind."
Rose said Southern Cal's recent success is the strongest draw west. As for UT, the Vols hit a bit closer to the heart.
"They just treat me like family," Rose said. "It's not even about football when I look at Tennessee. It's about me as a person."
Glenville quarterback Arvell Nelson also is being recruited by UT and has drawn strong college interest as a passer and an athlete.
Nelson took his official visit to Knoxville on Dec. 9, along with Rose and Small. Nelson, however, doesn't seem as intent on picking the same college as his teammates.
"We all like Tennessee," Rose said. "We see the same characteristics."
Only two teams in the trio's top three are recruiting each prospect, UT and Ohio State. Michigan State also tried to land the group but seems to be out of the running.
Package deals are becoming more rare in recruiting as prospects analyze depth charts and potential playing time..
"Most likely, we're going to go to the same school but I don't know," Rose said. "They could change their mind."
Rose said 75 percent of his practice snaps are at defensive tackle while he prepares for Saturday's all-star event. The remainder of the time, Rose is working at tight end.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pounder said speed is his best attribute but admits he needs to get stronger. Rose said he bench presses 315 and squats 325.
"It's really natural," Rose said of his strength. "I haven't worked at it. That's something I look forward to when I get to the next level, to see how strong I can really, really get."
Rose is set to make his decision Saturday during the telecast of the U.S. Army All-American bowl. Whoever he picks, should fans assume that Small and Browning will surely follow?
"Don't assume," Rose said with a smile. "No assumptions."
