Several prospects in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl have considered heading to the University of Tennessee. Two will make their announcements during today's game.
I won't mention that I correctly guessed, uh predicted, seven of eight prospects last year. Alas, I was seven of eight.
Remember Patrick Turner. The wide receiver from Goodpasture High School in Nashville was the only incorrect call on my part.
Surely, you can't forget his enigmatic recruitment. He looked like he was going to Tennessee before eventually signing with Southern Cal.
The whole process was further complicated by the fact that he canceled his announcement at the last minute.
So, technically, I was perfect last year in predicting prospects who announced their college decisions in San Antonio. Hmmm.
However, I digress. Tennessee is not the hot recruiting team it was a year ago. Despite what happens today, the Vols still helped themselves in the River City.
Utah lineman Joseph Faifili is considering the Vols, thanks to a chance meeting with UT commitment Jacques McClendon.
As for the predictions, here goes:
* Jarrell Miller: Miller said this week that he's still considering five schools: UT, Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Florida. I think it comes down to Tennessee and North Carolina and it's pretty close to 50-50.
Will the 6-foot-3, 235-pound linebacker from Highland Springs (Va.) High take his close relationship with UT coach Larry Slade or choose a school based on proximity?
Miller said he's close to Slade. He's also very close to North Carolina's Chapel Hill campus, which is just 170 miles from his home. Knoxville is 440 miles from Highland Springs.
Prediction: In a very close one, I'll take North Carolina.
* Robert Rose: Rose just laughs whenever people tell him that he already knows he's going to Ohio State. This should give him a chuckle.
I thought Rose was a long shot for the Vols to begin the week in San Antonio. The 6-4, 255-pound defensive end/tight end convinced me otherwise.
I still think he's headed to Ohio State but here's the X-factor. Rose said he's going to the same school as receiver Raymond Smalls and lineman Bryant Browning, his Glenville High teammates.
I think UT has a real shot at Smalls and Browning so I give the Vols more than just a puncher's chance. Southern Cal also is in the picture for the trio from Cleveland, Ohio, but I have to take the Buckeyes.
Prediction: Ohio State.
No Vols: Tim Hawthorne is no longer considering UT, a source close to his recruitment told the News Sentinel. The Vols fell out of favor with the receiver from Homewood (Ala.) High after seeming like the leader in his recruitment before the football season began. Hawthorne once lived in Nashville and followed the Vols growing up.
The 6-2, 200-pound Hawthorne is considered one of the top receiver prospects. UT still has not hired a wide receivers coach to fill the spot vacated after the firing of Pat Washington. That couldn't have helped the Vols land Hawthorne.
